Several US universities are famous all over the world for the excellent standard they maintain. Universities like Harvard and Princeton have been famous since ages. Besides these there are several other universities in USA which rank among the top 100 universities in the world. Every year several foreign students go to the US for pursuing higher studies or for conducting research work. For entering USA as a student, one needs to have a student visa issued by an American Consulate or Embassy.
For the issuing of a student Visa, the applicant must undergo an interview at the consulate and a fingerprint collection procedure as well. On-line applications can also be made by visiting the official website of the US Embassy. Applications can be made only after an I – 20 or an IAP – 66 form is availed from the institution, which has selected the student.

Types of Student Visas:
F-1 Student Visa – this kind of visas are issued for students who have been registered as a full time student for a academic or language program. The students falling under this category may live in the US for the entire period of his study and even 60 days after that. The full time students must finish their course within the date of expiration of the I-20 form.
J – 1 Student Visa – the J-1 Visa is applicable for students who require practical training pertaining to their course of study, unavailable in their own country. This student visa requires the individual to return to his country for at least two years before he can apply for an immigrant visa.
M-1 Student Visa – this visa is meant for students pursuing vocational and non academic trade courses. This visa is valid for one year only. Students cannot opt for changing their M-1 Visas into F-1 visas. Moreover, students who have been issued a M-1 visa cannot change their course of study.

The first step is to get the passport ready.
Next you have to have an approval from the institution where you have been enrolled
Proof of financial support comes next.
The next step is to fix an appointment with an US consulate or Embassy with the necessary documents.
